The Development of Standards of 100G Optical Module under 40KM

Let’s summarize the 100G optical module standards below 40km.

More details

The main standards of 100Gigabit optical module is IEEE 802.3ba issued in 2010 and IEEE 802.3bm issued in 2015.

IEEE 802.3ba

In 2010, IEEE released 802.3ba, which defined 40 Gigabit Ethernet (40GbE) and 100 Gigabit Ethernet (100GbE). 802.3ba-2010 is the first standard in the world regarding to 40Gbps and 100Gbps networks.
Also, it’s the first time to define two different data rates in the history, involving different mediums.
-multi mode fiber, single mode fiber
-twinax copper cable
-PCB signal

IEEE802.3bg

In March 2011, the IEEE officially released 802.3bg standard. It is a supplement to 802.3ba, defined 40G-FR single-mode fiber transmission within 2km.

IEEE802.3bj

In September 2011, group of P802.3bj of the IEEE was founded, to define 100G signal parameters of PCB and coaxial cable.
Optional:
-40GBASE-KP4, PCB
-40GBASE-CR4 7meter coaxial
-100GBASE-CR10 twinax copper cable

IEEE802.3bm

In May 2013, the IEEE set up P802.3bm, defined the transmission of 40G/100G. It supplemented the 4-channel 100G multimode and single-mode physical layer indicator, designated 40GBASE-LR4 and 100GBASE-LR4 as energy-efficient light Ethernet (EEE) options. Also, it defined the indicators of 40Gbps single-mode fiber transmission(more than 10KM).

IEEE802.3bq

In May 2013, the IEEE established P802.3bq, which defined 40GBASE-T.
– 40G parameters, balanced twinax cable within 30 meters

Other standards for 100G Optical Modules

All the major enterprises in the industry have formed different alliances, and actively develop and promote related different standards for 40Gb/s and 100Gb/s(mainly for the layout of their own technical ideas, do not want to be left behind in the game), such as:
100G PSM4 MSA
-100G CLR4
-CWDM-MSA
-Open Optics MSA
-More…(the word “More” is important, as more and more companies are engaging in 100G cake)

100G PSM4 MSA

100G PSM4 MSA is a new standard for multi manufacturers and multi technologies in industry. On March 5 of 2014, “100G PSM4 Regulations Parallel Four Channel Transmission” was released.
PSM4 adopts single mode fibers for parallel transmitting, using four lanes to transmit and four lanes to receive, with 25G per lane. Low cost 100G network compatible modules within 500meter reach, in smal form-factor: QSFP, inserted optic engine etc.

100G CLR4

100G CLR4 is another alliance with members of big companies in the industry.
In April 2014, 100G CLR4 declares large scale data center uses single mode fiber four wave length(surrounding 1310nm) to transmit, using four lanes to transmit and four lanes to receive, with 25G per lane, to support 100G network in 500 meter to 2km.

And, there are more, like CWDM4-MSA and Open OpticsMAS, similar to CLR4: 2km, 4*25G, single mode, 1310nm….

At the end, let’s check OVUM defined single-mode 100G optical module product chain.
