Hitachi Cable unveils 40-Gigabit port terabit box switches/MRV unveils EM316EUSM-10G Ethernet Universal Service Module

JULY 26, 2010 — Hitachi Cable (TOKYO:5812) has announced the development of two terabit box switches, the Apresia 15000-64XL-PSR , and Apresia 15000-32XL-PSR power supply redundant Ethernet switches. The Apresia 15000-64XL-PSR and Apresia 15000-32XL-PSR will be the world’s first 40-gigabit port equipment, Hitachi Cable asserts. Sales of these new switches will start at the end of February 2011.

The Apresia 15000-64XL-PSR is a terabit box switch that implements two 40G uplink ports, and sixty-four 1G/10G SFP/SFP+ ports in a 2U size unit. The Apresia15000-32XL-PSR is half the size of 64XL and implements a pair of 40G uplink ports and thirty-two 1G/10G SFP/SFP+ ports in a 1U size unit. Switching capacities are 1.28 Tbps for the 64XL, and 640 Gbps for the 32XL.

When set to equal capacities, the 64XL and the 32XL are not only space-saving, but also achieve significant cost-savings when compared to the conventional chassis switches, Hitachi Cable says. Furthermore, the power consumption of the 64XL and 32XL can be reduced to 370 W and 210 W, respectively.

Both the 64XL and 32XL are designed to be used as data center switches or network core switches and broadband L2 switches for enterprises and academic institutions. Planned functions specific to data center switches that play an important role in cloud computing include FCoE, storage I/O integrated technology, and Data Center Bridging (DCB), a new Ethernet technical standard to realize FCoE and other functions that support virtual server environments.

A data center license and L3 license are optional and can be purchased in accordance with the intended use. Without such licenses, both the 64XL and 32XL perform as high-end L2 switches.

AUGUST 2, 2010 — MRV Communications, Inc., has announced its new Fiber Driver EM316EUSM-10G, a 10-Gbps (10G) Ethernet Universal Service Module (EUSM) for provisioning Metro Ethernet Forum-compliant high-speed transparent Ethernet private line (EPL) services in bookend pair applications.

The EM316EUSM-10G is MRV’s latest addition to its suite of intelligent media converter-based optical Ethernet systems. The product also complements the company’s OptiSwitch intelligent 10G Ethernet demarcation series.

Located at the edge of the customer premises, the EM316EUSM-10G CO/CPE pair provides a carrier-to-customer network interface that separates the upstream WAN from the downstream network, which can be either a customer LAN or a peer carrier network. The bookend EUSM approach uses extended IEEE 802.3ah operation, administration, and maintenance protocols to fully manage both ends of the point-to-point fiber-optic link. Central office and customer premises link ports on the respective modules are controlled similarly from the managed side of the link, MRV says.

The module offers configuration flexibility with two modular SFP+ access ports, interoperable with 10G Ethernet interfaces, and two redundant modular XFP ports that support 10G Ethernet traffic over a variety of optical links up to 100 km including gray wavelengths and DWDM. With native support for jumbo packet sizes up to 9,600 bytes, the EM316EUSM-10G also supports such Ethernet services as distributed video and network storage arrays and provides low latency of 600 ns.

“With the market for 10G Ethernet services growing rapidly, our customers are seeing an increased demand for these services, and they need a more affordable system for deployment,” said Dilip Singh, chief executive officer of MRV. “With the EM316EUSM-10G, our customers are able to deliver premium services while reducing overall operating and capital expenses.”

“Delivery of Metro Ethernet services at 10G means that they are now catching up with the speed and bandwidth growth within the enterprise,” said Prayerna Raina, research analyst for Frost & Sullivan. “We see a bright future for these services, especially as companies like MRV drive down the cost of the infrastructure for 10G services. Carriers selling into these enterprise markets will likely turn to solutions like the EM316EUSM-10G because it allows them to provide services that meet the needs of their customers at a competitive price.”
